DANI ALVES BENCHED AS PUNISHMENT FOR CONTROVERSIAL VIDEO

Brazilian right back, Dani Alves, described the loss of Catalan giant, Barcelona, to fierce rival, Atletico Madrid, as "just football."

The response by the player is seen as a little odd by supporters of the club worldwide.

The 32-year old veteran was left out on the sidelines following his inappropriate video just as Barcelona were sent crashing out of the Champions League. This was a title they hoped to win back to back, breaking the jinx. His being left out of the squad against Valencia was to serve as a punishment for the controversial Instagram post.

Dani Alves wore a wig and was seen mimicking his girlfriend, Joana Sanz, in the video just after Barcelona lost to due to two strikes from Antoine Griezmann. Barcelona has a 2-1 advantage but lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Alves talked in a tongue-in-cheek fashion about how tragic the elimination from the European competition was. Fans were angry at the player; instead of him to apologize for the disappointing result or keep a low profile, he took to impersonating his woman.

He said: "Hello! Joana Sanz here. I'd like to send a message to my darling as he's down in the dumps. Honey, don't worry, it's just a game of football. Life goes on. You're worth much more than that. OK? I love you loads, I love you my darling. I love you!"

Barcelona have won just one of their last five matches in the La Liga. Since the 6-0 win over Getafe early last month, the Catalan side have struggled with a dip in form. From a 2-2 draw with Villareal to three successive losses to Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and recently Valencia, the chances of wining the La Liga title now is very slim, even with few games to go.
